Better indeed is Gyan Yog (knowledge) than practicing (Karma Yog); yet from Gyan Yog, Dhyan Yog (meditative thinking on subjects) is superior. From Dhyan is better renunciation of fruits of action; from renunciation of fruits of action, internal peace and bliss is achieved.
This Shloke states that Gyan yoga or Sankhya is better than practicing (or action learning), but Dhyan, i.e. meditative research of knowledge is superior. Dhyan-yog (not just meditation) is actually a heightened version of Sankhya, where meditation improves capacity to think and concentrate, and to penetrate world of consciousness beyond normal human capacities, where swift and easy realization of otherwise intricate knowledge is feasible. However, as Sankhya and meditation is not everyone's cup of tea, hence selfless actions based on erudite advisors are recommended for common people. Thus, renunciation of fruits of action is superior to meditation-based achievement.
Controlling all actions of sense gratification (which distracts mind), thus, controlling life breaths as well (which improves mind power), in such fire of self-restraints, (which helps focus mind into subjects deeply) and in such Yog, Yogis kindle lamps of knowledge.
In union with renunciation of fruits of actions and by knowledge who rants asunder all doubts, such self-contented people, introspecting within, are never bound (while performing duties) O Arjun!
… Ever content, firm and determined, incessantly practicing Yog, whose mind and intellect are dedicated to me (in understanding and working for Brahm), such of my devotees, are dear to Me, (…Says Kritsna, representing cosmic universe, the Brahm).
