Dharma is duties and behaviors of the people but it is usually linked to religion. Dharma is not a set of beliefs alone but also the recommendation of duties based on eternal truth. Duties may be contextually different owing to various ethical hierarchies. Religion by the western definition is subject of faith, but Dharma is logically derived conclusions and a methodology to structure ones day-to-day decisions and duties. Dharma provides broad measures in view of psychosomatic factors in nature, delusion and human limitations by which human judgment can go wrong. Thus Dharma helps us in becoming broadly observant, raises the consciousness and enables us to be tolerant. Dharma is not about the subjective Gods or prophets. Sanatan Dharma was not founded by one God or prophet but hundreds of thousands of unknown rishis, who never gave any subjective but objective name to this religion and called it Sanatan Dharma, i.e. duties in accordance to eternal law of nature. This means, that the law of nature is fixed, and how humans behave results their future. Therefore as human civilization we need to behave in such a way that we sustain our existence in harmonious and prosperous ways, which in turn is possible by peeling off the layers of ignorance’s, by gradually understanding law of nature, psychologies and sociologies. As often logic of humanity became tricky and difficult to fathom and memorize, Rishis evolved the language of symbols and stories. Thus, they communicated eternal laws to simple-minded people in terms of personified mythological stories, easy to remember and relate to science and knowledge.
Sanatan Dharma emphasizes on ‘eternity’ of the laws of nature, such as spirituality, which is not yet discovered by modern sciences as there are no explanation to evidences of spirituality. From spirituality, the principles of egalitarianism, altruism, cooperative living and tolerance are born. Sanatan Dharma defines human duties and behaviours. These laws hold true for everyone, irrespective of any religion one follows. However, Sanatan Dharma is not about humanity alone but the entire ensemble of Brahm and its components, knitted together in complicated cause and effect models. Nothing in this world is uncaused, not even births of species and humans, privileged or underprivileged. Every physical and metaphysical event has its causality. In scriptural narrations, one can find the mentions such as Dharma of rivers, mountains, trees etc. It means that these components in nature also have a purpose to serve, as part of eternal law of nature. Of the immense existences, humanity is just an infinitesimal fraction and follows all comprehensive laws of Brahm. In human context Dharma, encompass sociology, psychology, philosophies, politics and day-to-day human duties, behaviours and relationships, which must be connected to Spirituality. Duties vary at various ethical hierarchies such as self, family, nation and humanity etc. Knowledge of Sanatan Dharma must be educated to improve people’s decision-making, behaviours, mutual relationships, team-ship and duties.
Faith vs Religion
Faith is not about religions as the word ‘faith’ is typically used in English but faith of people is their very innate nature and persona that is deep seated at the core, characterizing the soul. Srimad Bhagwad Gita explains that faith of everyone is in accordance to his or her innate nature and inherent qualities that make certain ways and principles are more compelling to some. As said by Bhagwan Kritsna:
Three-fold are the faith of the embodied, according to their inherent nature—the Satwik (virtuous, pure, simple and noble), the Rajasik (royal, passionate, adjudicator) and the Tamasik (wicked, tormentor, indolent) – listen about them.
Commentary: Faiths are of three types: Satwa, rajas and tamas. Faith-in-satwa is about going with the truth, objectivity and understanding reality by factual studies, research and logical interpretations. Faith-in-rajas is about ostentations and sense gratification. Faith-in-tamas is about ignorance, superficiality, selfishness and pleasure sought in tormenting others. Tamasik can be easily deluded and enticed in greed. Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaishya and shudra are characterized by these qualities of nature and not by their parental births, the so-called castes. In addition to intrinsic character of souls, external education, observations, introspection and self-learning mechanism play an important role in nurturing a soul, but again it is due to the individual’s satwa, rajas and tamas qualities, not every lesson of life taken by the people. Self-nurturing is due to satwa qualities, and that is one of the faith people have. Therefore material actions in life become the means to elevate one’s soul. Such opportunities are available mostly in human life, where souls can nurture themselves to reach to higher consciousness. In most cases, out of ignorance people react by their intrinsic faith, instantaneously and uncontrollably. That governs one basic behaviour or instinct. Practicing Satwa in thoughts and actions enables one to take cognition of Purusha within and the souls listen to Purusha. Their soul becomes their friend and else an enemy.
The faith of everyone is in accordance to their innate nature and inherent qualities. As one’s nature is, so is their faith of soul, O Arjun!
‘Satwa ’ here refers to innate characteristics of souls or their persona. ‘Satwa Anurup’ means according to innate nature. Behaving by satwa-anurup means reflecting on one’s true character. On the other hand people moderate their behaviours externally, but on losing control, they react according to their original self. Innate tendencies are deep seated in souls and marks one’s thought patterns that vary from blind faith to logical verifications and saintly to cruel. Naturally, souls are characterized as Satwik (the people who can see truth), rajasik and tamasik. This is people’s true persona or ‘satwa anurup’. Although external education or indoctrination have their effects which may lead souls to modify their illusions or illuminations. Mostly we all moderate our behaviours and demonstrate an alter ego, not true self. Thus, by introspection and moderations or by external education, souls elevate themselves. By Karma, we tend to modify the satwa forms as well, and thus souls may rise from tamasik to rajasik and from rajasik to satwik. This is the message in the Shloke.
Beliefs in this world are two-fold as said since ages, O’ sinless one. Sankhya Yogis, (the analysts and scientists) follow the path of logic and knowledge and other Yogis follow the path of karma/action learning.
Gyan yog and Karma yog are two categories of belief systems. This expands to four-fold Paths:
Bhakti Yog (trust based), Karmayog (action learners) are one category, while
Sankhyayog (logicians), Dhyan yog (Meditationists) belong to thinkers’ category.
Note that in all religions both types of people are found - Blind believers and Rationalists. The least thinking category is known as fundamentalists and ironically, often they do not demonstrate true fundamentals of religions but remain superficially rhetoric. Unfortunately, religious issues are often not subjected to logical discussions and rationalists remain aloof. As a result, instead of developing religions further as guide to human duties and behaviours it is gradually slipping into unscrupulous hands, like terrorists and fanatics. The erudite and rationalist must take reign of religions before it is too late.
Unless thinkers take cognition of Purusha within and come forward, Prakriti or Nature would continue to spread its fangs and victimize humanity. Erudite have potential to save and flourish humanity and this is why erudite are loved by the Gods. These eternal principles apply unilaterally to all humans, irrespective of their religions, place or time. These eternal rules cannot be bound by the boundaries created by man-made religions. Natural religions of people is by their innate character, which in turn is combinations of satwa, rajas and tamas and yet they are free to elevate themselves or descend. To this extent, Sanatan Dharma is completely secular. We tend to categorize ourselves as Hindu, Muslims, Christians, Jews etc, but truly, these are not the true faith of people, instead prisons of birth alone.
Srimad Bhagwad Gita describes eternal laws in three ways: Science of Spirituality (Chapters 1–6), Creations (Chapters 7–13) and Behavioural part of Humanity (Chapters 14–18). Spirituality in people is also the source of physical creations. Metaphysics is the root of Physics.
Dharma is not about the subjective Gods and faiths, but about duties and behaviours. Doable's that leads to constructive consequences is Dharma. Opposite is Adharma, driven by ignorance, ego and attachments. God made religions are only two folds:
Daiv Dharma, the goodness and constructivism, driven by enlightenment and
Adaiv or satanic, the evil and destructives driven by ignorance.
This is evident in here:
Two types of beings are created in this world, the divine and the demoniacal; the divine have been described in detail (in previous shlokes), about Demoniac ‘Listen to Me, O Arjun!’
Very clearly, Bhagwan says that there are only two types of people in this world, Daiv and Adaiv (Or Sur and Asur), known by their qualities. Adaiv is due to Tamas or ignorance of various kinds, and Daiv is due to conscious thought process, introspection, and moderation This is eternal law of nature and applies to all, whether Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews etc. As tamas is more spontaneous, Adaiv seems to have greater proliferation among ignorant who are typically superficial in thoughts and more sensitive to destructive thoughts. An ignorant mind may be led by blind belief and become a staunch devotee of a fraud Baba, and may be victimized by a tantric or he may be indoctrinated by terrorists in the name or religion. However, a simple and ignorant mind is more dangerous as well. Capacity to think is achieved as people listen to the internal voice inside them. This is ‘Kayastha’ (situated inside body) which is God’s element in all beings and it is the ‘sixth sense’ that keeps alarming and enlightening people.. Anyways, one’s action could be helping humanity or endangering it. The former is Godly while later is devilish. These eternal principles of Sanatan Dharma cross all boundaries of manmade religions, and apply to all humans.

As sinister in nature unfolds and spreads its fangs, ignorant humans dance to its tunes and get carried away, leading to metaphysical disorder. As the physical disorder increases physical entropy, which can be controlled or reduced by external energy. The , the same second law of thermodynamics applies in metaphysical realm as well, as negative energies of individuals rise, mass unrest results, average anxiety and pains in society increases, trust goes down, and entropy of society rises, which requires external moderation and control. This is when the Gods, and Prophets are born, as natural course and cycles of evil and good. Gods and Prophets inculcate introspection and self-control in us and help alleviate rise of metaphysical entropies of humanity. Gods and evils exist simultaneously. Rise of one leads to rise of other. Physics and metaphysics co-exist in tandem. In fact, we are living both the worlds simultaneously, the perishable physical world where entropies rise, and imperishable metaphysical consciousness, where entropies rise as evil proliferates, but it is balanced out by the rise of Gods as well. Physical is Prakriti and Metaphysical is Purusha in Indian epistemological narration. Human behaviour is the result of both.
Our science is stuck within the realm of physical world. Doesn’t matter how much it explores into the atoms, searching the roots of creations and law of nature, the quarks and strings, at the end it is going to be massless attribute alone. Research on metaphysics is needed. By spirituality, the metaphysical entropy of society can be reduced and the spread of impiety diminishes. By good thinking and benevolent actions, one feels peace and happiness while the opposite brings pains and anxiety, as society plunge into impiety. To control such disorder as quasi-static control is required on physical machineries, similarly, a quasi-static control is provided by Dharma, and its logical understanding and conscientious practices. Without which, in Bhaktiyog, sometimes Adharma may appear as Dharma. Like machines, maintenance of soul is required by bringing it back to the logic of spirituality. It means that one must be mindful of his or her duties, scrutiny it in view of spirituality and stay in control of humanity.
Better is one’s own duty (best suited to one’s natural qualities and skills) than the duty of others, not so perfect in. Those acquiring duties based on natural merit incur no sin.
Duties in synergy with inborn talents and qualities should not be abandoned even if they are defective in the beginning as all activities have imperfections in the beginning, just like smoke in fire initially (they become smokeless later).
Commentary: Inborn skills and natural talent need to be identified and perfected. Duties associated to such talents should be developed and not abandoned as one would naturally excel in the field he has natural talents. The countries that promote the natural talents of its people and secure medals in the fields of science or sports, where as other countries lag behind. Society seeks the maximum advantage as each of its talent is put to best use, and this forms the basis of why developed countries import talents and provide easy immigration to talented ones. Ironically, many talents are killed in the real world due to ignorance’s. It is a challenge for the developing world to discover and promote their talents.
Considering one’s Swadharma, one has no reason to be sceptic and tremble. For a warrior, nothing else is superior than to fight and protect Dharma (establish justice and the righteousness).
To be the best, you must recognize your best skills and capitalize on them. You cannot beat others who are better than you in specific skills, while it is difficult for them to beat you in skills you have natural upper edge. This is Swadharma, the innate qualities, using which you may not only excel, but also contribute your best to the society. This is an eternal law and applies to entire humanity across all religions.
Everybody should realize their qualities and develop them as their Dharma. Natural qualities and instincts are demonstrated not only in humans but in animals as well. On National Geographic and Discovery Channel, they often show lions chasing buffaloes. Most buffaloes run away from lions but sometimes a buffalo fights back. Looking at him other buffaloes turn back to fight too. The leader buffalo shows its ‘Rajasik kshatriya quality.
In a WhatsApp video, a langur was seen playing with tiger and picking its tail and quickly running away before the tiger could react. The tiger was not able to catch the langur. Such bravery by langur is exceptional. A goat was shown to fight and chase an Ox. A cat scared away a crocodile. A lioness saved a stag. A leopard took revenge on an eagle for killing its cub, as it climbed tree top to hunt eagle. Such cases of satwa, rajas and tamas qualities are sighted in animals too. Such innate nature is true persona of people, often categorized as four castes in humans. Flourishing societies always make use of their talents.
